This page contain additional details for my curriculum vitae. It has sections dealing with teaching experience, programming experience, languages spoken, sport and other interests.
Teaching Experience
As well as my day jobs, I also have been engaged in a number of teaching positions:- From 1997-2000 I taught a course in Data Design and Database Management Systems as part of the evening degrees in Business and Information Technology and Information Systems, in Trinity College, Dublin. This course covered data architecture and information management. It included data analysis and design, file organisation, database design, features of a DBMS, data integrity and security, concurrency control, recovery, structured query language (SQL) and database interfaces. Practical projects formed a substantial part of this course. I designed, constructed and managed a Domino based web site where my students downloaded their assignments, submitted their work and learned of their marks.
- From 1992 to 1994 I taught a course Software Engineering Through C. This was a course organised jointly by Digital and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. Students study C programming as well as some of the basic techniques of Software Engineering.
- From 1986 to 1988, I taught a course entitled Introduction to Magnetic Recording. This was an internal Digital training course. It covered some of the theory of magnetics and how this applied to magnetic recording. It was attended by engineers and technicians who worked with disk and tape storage devices.
Programming
- Programmed in a wide variety of programming languages including NodeJS, Python, Java, C, C++, Pascal, BASIC, FORTRAN, and SQL.
- Developed a number of programs in assembler on PDP-11 and Intel architectures.
- Operating systems I have developed for include Windows, DOS, VAX/VMS and several flavours of UNIX.
- Developed a number of Sametime plug-ins which have been widely deployed inside of IBM
Languages Spoken
- A native speaker of English.
- A working knowledge of Irish, French and German.
Sports
- Coached a girls soccer team for my local club Castleknock Celtic and maintained a blog with the team's news
- Was a keen rugby player in College and School. Represented my University at senior level and played with the Connacht under-20 team. Won several trophies including the Connacht Senior Schools Cup and the Connacht Under-20 Cup. Was the press relations officer of the rugby club while in college.
- Keen on keeping fit. I cycle to and from work everyday and I participate in a number of triathlons/running races every year.
Music
- While in secondary school I had a part time job as a DJ on a local radio station "Independent Radio Galway". Since local radio was technically illegal at the time in Ireland, I used the pseudonym "Brian Floyd" rather than my real name.
- Was a member of a band named "Ullsull" during the years 1977-1983 (while I was a schoolboy and college student). Played both bass guitar and rhythm guitar,
unfortunately there are no recordings of the band's music.
Other Interests
- Served on the Industrial Advisory Board for a number of academic review boards at local universities and research groups funded though Science Foundation Ireland (e.g. The Irish Software Engineering Research Centre Lero and the Centre for Next Generation Localisation).
